All About Us

The Sisterhood of The Conservative Synagogue is made up of a vibrant group of women who reach out to the congregation in an effort to provide important social, educational, religious and cultural activities.

Sisterhood is open to all female synagogue members as well as members of the Jewish community-at-large. There are a myriad of ways to commit oneself to volunteerism in our shul by participation in Sisterhood functions.

We look forward to socializing with one another at events such as evenings out at local restaurants, theaters or other cultural offerings. We invite a variety of speakers to discuss a wide-ranging body of topics of interest to women.

Our Mitzvah Committee, a strong and very important aspect of Sisterhood, provides support for all members of our Synagogue family during times of crisis, be it death, illness, or other significantly stressful events.

Sisterhood's Ritual Committee provides our children and adult members with important traditional holiday rituals, such as organizing a break fast after Yom Kippur and distributing apples and honey for Rosh Hashanah, hamentashen for Purim and candy at Simhat Torah.  This year we were thrilled to work with Cantor Berman to host two Tu B’Shvat sedarim for the women in our community and excited to host an ice cream party in our congregational sukkah.

Our Judaica Boutique Committee holds an annual Hanukkah boutique and features beautiful gift items for sale throughout the year in our lobby display case.

We embrace the children of our community in many ways… This year we inaugurated Shalom Baby to welcome new babies and to reach out to moms during this busy transitional time in their lives.  We are proud to acknowledge each bar and bat mitzvah with a gift on his or her special day.  And we keep our college students connected to our Synagogue family via College Connection; fun gift boxes are sent to them for the High Holy Days, Hanukkah, Purim and Pesah

We even publish a Membership Directory to make it easy for Synagogue members to reach each other.

Our dynamic Sisterhood of The Conservative Synagogue grows larger, more varied and stronger with each new member we enlist. We are a committed group of women who reach out to each other in friendship, bound by our common interest in religion, family and community. We welcome you to join us. For those interested in joining Sisterhood, please contact our co-presidents Robin Kurtz and Nancy Cohen.

Sisterhood News

What are those Chaverim Shabbat Dinners given by TCS’ Sisterhood that have everyone buzzing?  With a few exceptions (due to holidays or school vacations), these dinners occur on the first Friday of each month after   Kabbalat Shabbat services.  Dinner is a “casual, buffet-style, no assigned seating, sit with family and friends, make new friends” kind of evening.  In fact, the word “chaverim” means “friends”!  We have our “regulars” who attend every month without fail, and we have those who became “regulars” after sampling the Chicken Marsala and chicken tenders!  And then there are the “every    couple of monthers” who usually bring another TCS family into the fold.  We try to keep it a low-cost proposition with our special pricing ($20 per person or $60 per family, whichever is less).  Come to one and see for yourself how our dinners have really caught on as a special way to     begin the weekend without stress, with your “TCS chaverim”.

Dinner reservation forms are always available on our website (www.tcs-westport.org).  The next two Chaverim Shabbat Dinners are at Compo Beach on July 11 and August 15.  We hope to see you there!

Once the fall begins, we return to our regular (first    Shabbat of each month) schedule, except where noted below:

We know that summer is a time for relaxing with family and friends, so when you're not away on vacation, grab a blanket and stop by the beach for one of our Chaverim Shabbat dinners.  It will make you feel like you are on vacation!

Have a fabulous summer, and don't forget the sunscreen,

Nancy Cohen and Robin Kurtz
