Rabbi Robert L. Tobin

Talmud Torah k'neged kulan - The Study of Torah is Paramount

Rabbi Tobin has been the Rabbi of The Conservative Synagogue since July, 2003.  He is actively involved in all our schools, and has a passion for teaching and learning.

He takes pride in being a Conservative pulpit rabbi.  He is committed to welcoming Jews and Jewish families of all backgrounds, and models an egalitarian and observant lifestyle.  He has been involved in Jewish education at all levels, community service, interfaith dialogue, and is a strong supporter of Israel - serving on the MERCAZ/USA national board of directors.

Prior to being our pastor and teacher, Rabbi Tobin was Associate Rabbi at Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore, MD for four years.  He specialized in teaching, membership and young family programming - skills which we have benefitted greatly from during his tenure.  He was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in 1999.  His earlier employment experiences include having been a Judaic Teacher at Temple Adat Ari El in Los Angeles and at Camp Ramah in Canada, serving as a Hillel Graduate Resident Fellow at the University of Judaism and managing the Alumni Fund at the University of Rochester.
While a member of, and a rabbinic intern at, the Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn (1994-1999),  he met his wife Lisa at Sukkot services. They were married in 1998.  Their love story of "Two Jews met at synagogue, fell in love and got married" is both true and surprising, as each had individually chosen to become Jewish as young adults long before they met.  Lisa and Rabbi Tobin have four children, Maya Liora (5), Yosef Lev (5), Ezra David (3), and Avi Ilan (1).  Lisa is a Jewish Federation professional, having worked at The Associated in Baltimore, and now directs Reading Partners for the Stamford Jewish Federation.

Rabbi Tobin grew up in and around Rochester, NY, and has lived or studied in South Africa, Chile, France and Israel.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in 1988.  He has earned three advanced degrees—a Master of Arts in Religion from Syracuse University in 1992, a Master of Hebrew Letters from the University of Judaism in 1994 and a Master of Arts in Judaic Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York in 1999.   Lisa, like the rabbi, also holds 3 Master's degrees.

Aside from his joy in Jewish traditions, Rabbi Tobin enjoys studying, watching baseball, rooting for the Georgetown Hoyas, chess, reading in science and history, and, of course, raising their four children with Lisa.

Our Cantor

Laura Berman

Cantor Laura Berman has been with The Conservative Synagogue since the fall of 2003, after graduating from The Jewish Theological Seminary.  While studying for her Diploma of Hazzan and Masters in Sacred Music, she served as Cantorial Intern at The Jewish Center in Princeton, where she instructed bar/bat mitzvah students both   individually and in classes.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she conducted Shabbat and holiday services in Princeton, and has served as a substitute cantor at Town & Village Synagogue in NYC, Society for the Advancement of Judaism in NYC, and at Arlington-Fairfax Jewish Congregation.  As a student, she also interned at Beth El in Stamford, leading Shabbat services, family services, junior congregation and reading Torah and Haftarah.  She has served as High Holy Day cantor in several synagogues, including Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Laura Berman’s enthusiasm for Judaism was exhibited by her passion for Jewish music, by participating in congregational choirs, and her active role in United Synagogue Youth in her teens.  After earning an MBA from Wharton and having a successful career in business, she made a career change to pursue her three passions:  Judaism, music and teaching.
