Rabbi Tobin has been the Rabbi of The Conservative Synagogue since July,
2003. He is actively involved in all our schools, and has a passion
for teaching and learning.
He takes pride in being a
Conservative pulpit rabbi. He
is committed to welcoming Jews and Jewish families of all backgrounds, and
models an egalitarian and observant lifestyle.
He has been involved in Jewish education at all levels, community service,
interfaith dialogue, and is a strong supporter of Israel - serving on the MERCAZ/USA
national board of directors.
Prior to being our pastor and teacher, Rabbi Tobin
was Associate Rabbi at Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore, MD for
four years. He specialized in teaching, membership and young family
programming - skills which we have benefitted greatly from during his
tenure. He was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America in 1999. His earlier employment experiences include having
been a Judaic Teacher at Temple Adat Ari El in Los Angeles and at Camp
Ramah in Canada, serving as a Hillel Graduate Resident Fellow at the
University of Judaism and managing the Alumni Fund at the University of
Rochester.
While a member of, and a rabbinic intern at, the Kane Street Synagogue in
Brooklyn (1994-1999), he met his wife Lisa at Sukkot services. They were
married in 1998. Their love story of "Two Jews met at synagogue,
fell in love and got married" is both true and surprising, as each had
individually chosen to become Jewish as young adults long before they
met. Lisa and Rabbi Tobin have four children, Maya Liora
(5), Yosef Lev (5), Ezra David (3),
and Avi Ilan (1). Lisa is a Jewish Federation professional, having
worked at The Associated in Baltimore, and now directs Reading Partners
for the Stamford Jewish Federation.
Rabbi Tobin grew up in
and around Rochester, NY, and has lived or studied in South Africa, Chile,
France and Israel. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign
Service from Georgetown University in 1988. He has earned three
advanced degrees—a Master of Arts in Religion from Syracuse University in
1992, a Master of Hebrew Letters from the University of Judaism in 1994
and a Master of Arts in Judaic Studies from the Jewish Theological
Seminary of America in New York in 1999. Lisa, like the rabbi,
also holds 3 Master's degrees.
Aside from his joy in Jewish traditions, Rabbi Tobin enjoys studying, watching
baseball, rooting for the Georgetown Hoyas, chess, reading in science and history, and, of course,
raising their four children with Lisa.
