USY/KADIMA NEWS It’s clear that WPSY (Westport Synagogue Youth) is indeed worthy of the award received last year for "Chapter on the Rise"; our TCS youth groups are getting stronger as kids get more involved in participating in events as well as planning them. This year both Kadima (grades 6 through 8) and USY (grades 9-12) expanded their range of activities.
KADIMA (grades 6-8)
The Atid/Kollel Religious School students enjoyed snacks and shmoozing with some USYers. The older teens highlighted some of their personal experiences in USY and promoted upcoming Kadima events. I would like to thank Michael Fraade, Sarah Glasser, Sam Suter, and Zack Weiner for helping out in February and March. Our Kadimaniks and USYers showed leadership by helping run the games for younger kids at our annual Purim Carnival! Please refer to page 12 for the complete list of our spirited youth volunteers.
Our upcoming Kadima events include: Tuesday, April 8 and May 6: We will host two snack parties during the 7:00pm break during Atid/Kollel classes. Sunday, May 18: Hold on to your seats because WPSY is joining the Regional Six Flags Event; thanks in advance to our two parent chaperones Rob Haroun and Matt Landau! Watch your mailbox for details. USY
USYers have been busy lately engaged in promoting the youth groups to their younger TCS contemporaries and running their own fundraisers. USYers ran bake sales in an effort to support an organization called "SHEKEL" which provides education to severely mentally disabled children in Israel. As if they had any time to spare, they also participated in regional events and launched their very first USY Shul-in on March 7 to 8!
We are proud to report that our very first
Shul-in was a huge success! Twenty-one USYers had a blast and hopefully
will be eager to participate in future events as they build a stronger
connection to Judaism and our culture! Many thanks to our USY board for
planning this wonderful event. I hope that it was the first of many more to
come! The Shul-In was truly a labor of love, and I'd like to thank the
following people for their help:
Marcy Bratman
for coordinating the logistics and ordering the best food for us;
Cantor Laura Berman
for her kind words and for connecting our USYers with V’Atah, the singing
group from NYU;
Sisterhood for welcoming us to the
Chaverim
Shabbat dinner;
Sarah Glasser
for making the best cholent I have
ever tasted; Joanne Folger for making sure that I always have everything
that I need; Larry Kleinman and Susie Weiner for being fearless chaperones;
our Israeli emissaries Gal Shahir and Almog Arie for their enthusiastic
help; Jon Fraade for his special delivery of marzipan's greatest rugalach on
the planet; Karin Fraade for helping with the cholent; and Liz Kaner and
Benay Rubin for lending their support. On behalf of the USY board, our
executive liaison Ari Rothman, and our Youth Co-chairs Benay and Liz, I want
to extend a very special thank you to Danny Kochavi, our wonderful religious
school director, for his involvement and contributions. We thank him for
being so gracious and staying with us the whole weekend, participating in
all the activities and games, bringing shira and ruach to the event,
teaching a class, and helping with anything that was needed!
