TCS Israel Experience Day One
Posted on April 16, 2010
Dear Friends,
Yesterday, 39 of us gathered at Newark Airport to begin our exciting journey! (When we arrive in Jerusalem, the Bergers will join us, making us a group of 43). Due to the volcano in Iceland, our flight took an extra hour in order to avoid Iceland and Northern Europe, but nonetheless we arrived safe and sound in Tel Aviv at 8:30AM Friday morning. (Some of you may recall our Iceland saga last time we traveled to Israel!) At the airport, we met our friendly tour guide, Reuven Lavi, who was born in England but has spent his entire adult life in Israel.
After boarding the bus, we immediately traveled to a field in Rechovot where we participated in the mitzvah of leket (gleaning). We picked some 850 pounds of clementines that would have otherwise gone to waste. By Sunday, these clementines will be distributed to those who are hungry in Israel.
From Rechovot, we went to the Nachalat Binyaimin/Carmel Market section of Tel Aviv. The area was “hopping” with excitement on a beautiful Friday afternoon! We ate lunch and checked out the local artists and general Tel Aviv scene.
Finally, we checked in to our hotel, The Carlton. We relaxed, showered and got ready for Shabbat. We will hold Kabbalat services tonight on the gorgeous Tel Aviv beach followed by Shabbat dinner.
Each day of our journey will be chronicled by a different family in the group. I hope you enjoy reading about our adventure!
Shabbat Shalom from Tel Aviv!
Rabbi Jeremy, Riki, Meital, Ayelet, and Avi Wiederhorn
